Banana Fish MerchLast year, MAPPA’s anime adaptation of Akimi Yoshida’s Banana Fish surprised many. It’s not every day a 30-year-old manga gets an anime, much less a faithful one. The series’ realist artwork and action-oriented storytelling broke from shojo manga conventions to gain a significant crossover audience of male readers. Its sudden end shook its loyal fanbase, as evidenced by the outpouring of grief on the official blog and Mixi group. Banana Fish, or B1, is a drug that’s central to the story. It’s what caused the massacring of Griffin’s squad members and is used by Golzine to brainwash his victims. MAPPA’s anime was a pleasant surprise last year, with its realistic art and mature subject matter (including drugs and gay male on male romance) that appealed to a wider audience than just fujoshi. ShirtsBanana Fish is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Akimi Yoshida and serialized in the Bessatsu Shojo Comic from 1985 to 1994. The series is notable for its realistic artwork and action-oriented storyline, which marked a departure from the typical conventions of Shojo manga (girls' manga) at the time. The series is set primarily in New York City and follows street gang leader Ash Lynx's investigations into a criminal conspiracy involving the drug banana fish, and his interactions with the photographer Eiji Okumura. The series' mature subject matter and the erotic undertones of its storytelling have earned it wide acclaim from critics. Its themes of homosexuality and homoeroticism are a central theme, and it helped popularize the boys' love (male-male romance) genre of manga. Show your love for the show with a high-quality, comfortable Banana Fish t-shirt or hoodie. Available in a variety of styles and sizes, including the best-selling black and classic white. Shirts are expertly printed on ethically-sourced, sweatshop-free apparel in the USA. If you prefer a baggy fit, we recommend ordering two sizes up. |
